The First Thing : THE WALL COLOUR...
The wall colours to be well choosen... The rooms should not look very dark... If there is a lot of sunlight coming in the room then you can use bright vibrant colours if the space is meant for some activity or study... If it is your bedroom you can give shades & combination of 2-3 pastel colours... If well played you can put more colours also...
You should put colours which go with your personality also so that people connect with your house.. Get an expert help in this :)
for the choice of colors, You may like the blue and all it's shades, however i would suggest that you just leave it to your wife like I did, it ends up right .....always.....I guess home is where the heart is ....

Happiness is when u feel one in that colour only then your heart will feel the warmth of your Home...
